This third programme based on Gerry McGovern's new book looks at the damage done by the digital mindset (more, cheap, now, throwaway, ‘free’)
We love our smart phones but they are highly environmentally costly to manufacture and cannot be recycled.
Another shocking aspect – I had never heard of this before, but it been well covered since the Coronavirus outbreak - is the link between smartphone manufacture and global pandemics like Covid-19. The search for ‘rare earth’ materials for smartphones is bringing people into much greater contact with wild animals and this contact is helping viruses jump from overstressed wildlife into humans, with consequences we all now understand.
Maybe, just maybe, the Coronavirus will provide game changing warning about the consequences of our digital lifestyles that will lead to action.
